Attur Fort
Tamil Nadu, India
Attur Fort, located on the banks of the Vashista River in Salem district, Tamil Nadu, is a historic fort built in the 17th century by a Palaiyakkarar chieftain from the Gatti Mudaliar dynasty under the Madurai Nayaks, specifically a leader named Lakshmana Nayakan.
The fort spans 62 acres with walls about 30 feet high and 15 feet wide, constructed from local stone without mortar. It has four entrances and was strategically guarded by the river on one side and moats on the others. Throughout its history, Attur Fort played a significant role during the Mysore Kingdom era, being occupied at different times by Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and the British.
After changing hands through various conflicts including the Anglo-Mysore Wars, it came under British control following the Treaty of Srirangapatnam in 1792. The British used it as a garrison and ordnance station until 1854, after which it ceased military operation.
The fort contains two magazine points, two palaces, a court, three treasuries, and three temples. Some parts are dilapidated or encroached upon today, and it is currently overseen by the Archaeological Department of Tamil Nadu. The fort's architecture reflects its military and administrative importance, featuring bomb-proof chambers, water gates, and a large vaulted hall once used as an audience chamber.
