Aundha Fort
Aundhewadi, Maharashtra, India
Aundha Fort, also known as Avandha Killa, is located in the village of Aundhewadi in the Nashik district of Maharashtra, perched atop the Sahyadri mountain range at about 1,300 meters elevation.
Built in the 14th century during the Bahmani reign and later captured by the Mughals and Marathas, the fort served as a watchtower for nearby Vishramgad Fort, helping to secure the region. It features rock-cut steps, multiple water cisterns, and remnants of temples and structures. The fort is known for its challenging trek marked by steep sections and panoramic views of surrounding forts like Patta, Bitangad, and Kalsubai.
Its strategic location allowed it to oversee and protect trade routes, making it significant in regional defense and historical conflicts involving various rulers, including the Peshwas and British.
