Badami Fort
Badami, Karnataka, India
Badami Fort in Karnataka is a 6th-century hill fortress built by the Chalukya Dynasty, serving as their capital and strategic military center.
The complex includes two forts on rocky hills overlooking Agastya Lake, known as Bavanbande-kote and Ranamandala-kote, featuring massive sandstone walls, bastions, observation posts, and gateways. The fort integrates rock-cut caves and temples, including two Shivalaya temples from the 7th century dedicated to Hindu deities, reflecting the rich Chalukyan architectural and artistic heritage with intricate carvings and pillared mandapas.
The fort’s layout, with narrow stairways and vaulted corridors, was designed for defense, while rock-cut chambers served multiple functions such as watchtowers and prisons. Over centuries, rulers like the Vijayanagara Empire, Bahmani sultans, and Mysore rulers modified the fort before it fell into ruin.
