Ballarshah Fort
Ballarpur, Maharashtra, India
Balapur Fort, also known historically as Ballarshah Fort, is an ancient fortress located in the city of Balapur in Akola district, Maharashtra, situated on the eastern banks of the Wardha River.
It was founded in the 15th century by Gond King Khandkya Ballal Sah, who also established the town of Ballarpur, named after him. The fort once served as the seat of the Gond kingdom before the capital was moved to Chandrapur.
Constructed with large black stones, the rectangular fort features lofty walls and towers with two main gates positioned at right angles, enhancing its defensive capabilities, along with a smaller entrance on the riverbank. While the fort's walls remain largely intact, the interior buildings are now in ruins, and local lore suggests there are undiscovered tunnels within the fort.
Historically significant, the fort witnessed various political and military events during the Gond and later periods and is now a protected ancient monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. It remains a significant site attracting visitors interested in Maharashtra's rich historical heritage.
