Bandar Fort
Kara Agraharam, Andhra Pradesh, India
Bandar Fort in Kara Agraharam, Andhra Pradesh, is a historic 16th-century fort built by the Dutch as part of their colonial trade network in the region.
It served as a crucial coastal defense and trading outpost, functioning as a customs and port office, military drill center, armoury, hospital, and jail. The fort played an important role in guarding the east coastal gateway of trade between Europe and India and witnessed control by the Dutch, French, British, and the Nizam rulers.
Architecturally, the fort features a quadrangular enclosure with rooms and godowns built around two open courts, massive walls, and bastions designed for defense and storage of war supplies. Despite its historical importance and diverse colonial legacy, the fort today faces severe neglect, with crumbling walls, illegal encroachments, and little preservation effort, putting this important monument at risk of further decay.
The area near the fort also contains a memorial for thousands who lost their lives in a devastating 1864 cyclone, adding to its cultural significance.
