Bankapura Fort
Karnataka, India
Bankapura Fort, located in the Haveri district of Karnataka, India, is a historic site with origins dating back to at least the 5th century CE, ruled over time by dynasties such as the Kadambas, Gangas, Hoysalas, Chalukyas, and later by the Vijayanagara Empire and Muslim rulers including the Adilshahis.
The fort is best known for housing the Nagareshvara Temple, also called Aravattu Kambada Gudi or the "Temple with sixty-six pillars," built in the 11th century in Western Chalukya architectural style. The temple features intricately carved soapstone pillars, decorative ceilings, and sculptures honoring Hindu deities like Shiva and Vishnu.
Though damaged during invasions by the Bahamanis and Adil Shah, the temple’s majestic hall (mantapa) remains a significant example of medieval Karnataka architecture. The fort itself once had massive granite ramparts and a deep moat but now lies partly in ruins, reflecting its long history of battles and changing rulers.
