Verified Barabati Fort

Cuttack, Odisha, India

Barabati Fort in Cuttack, Odisha, India, is an ancient fort with origins dating back to 987 CE, built by Maharaja Markata Keshari of the Somavamshi dynasty.

The fort was constructed to protect the city of Cuttack, situated strategically between the Mahanadi and Kathjodi rivers, with natural defenses created by the rivers and a wide stone-lined moat surrounding it. Later rulers, such as King Anangabhima Deva III of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, enhanced the fort, making it the capital and seat of power for various dynasties including the Eastern Gangas, Gajapatis, and Marathas.

Architecturally, the fort originally had nine floors and featured a grand palace, a deep moat, massive walls, multiple towers, a Shahi mosque, and temple ruins, reflecting a blend of defensive and religious structures. The fort also witnessed British occupation and later became a prison.

Today, although mostly in ruins, Barabati Fort stands as a prominent historic and cultural landmark surrounded by the modern city and the Barabati Stadium, symbolizing Odisha's rich medieval heritage.
