Basavakalyana Chalukya Fort
Karnataka, India
Basavakalyana Fort, also known as Kalyana Fort, is located in Karnataka and was built in the 10th century by the Western Chalukyas under King Nalaraja.
It served as the royal capital for the Chalukya dynasty from 1050 to 1195 and saw control by various dynasties, including the Kalachuris, Yadavas, Bahmani Sultanate, and Nizams. The fort is strategically designed, utilizing natural boulders connected by strong walls, and consists of three concentric irregular walls.
It features seven gates, with five still intact, and has thick bastions, guard rooms, and cannons, including a massive cannon called 'Khadak Bijli Thopu.' Inside the fort are ruins of the Rajmahal palace, a temple, two deep wells with ramps, and secret passages for escape.
The fort’s architecture blends military defensive measures with elements of art, like engraved Yali images and colorful palace ceilings, reflecting its historical and cultural prominence in the Deccan region. Although partially in ruins today, it remains a significant monument to the legacy of the Chalukya rulers and their era.
