Bekal Fort
Kerala, India
Bekal Fort, located in Kerala's Kasaragod district, is the largest and one of the best-preserved forts in the state, built in 1650 AD by Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty.
The fort, spreading over 40 acres, is uniquely keyhole-shaped and constructed with massive laterite stones, designed primarily for military defense rather than administration, with no palaces or mansions inside. It is strategically positioned on a promontory surrounded on three sides by the Arabian Sea, providing excellent vantage points for spotting naval threats.
Its architecture features robust zigzag entrances, trenches, high walls with differently placed firing holes to defend against enemies at varying distances, bastions, and an observation tower added later by Tipu Sultan, who further fortified the structure.
The fort’s design reflects advanced military strategy from that era, combining traditional Indian and Islamic architectural influences. Over the centuries, Bekal Fort saw control pass through various rulers including Hyder Ali and the British East India Company.
