Belapur Fort
Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Belapur Fort, located in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, was built by the Siddis of Janjira in the 16th century to control maritime trade routes along the Arabian Sea.
The fort originally had five bastions and was well fortified to defend against naval attacks. Over the years, it was captured by the Portuguese, then the Marathas under Chimaji Appa who recaptured it in 1737, and later by the British in the early 19th century. The fort's strategic position near the mouth of the Panvel Creek allowed it to oversee the surrounding waters and protect local territories.
Today, it stands in ruins with only two bastions partly intact, and the walls partially preserved. The fort area features temples dedicated to local deities and remnants that attract historians and trekkers interested in its rich past and scenic views overlooking the sea.
