Maharashtra, India

It is set amidst dense forest and is part of the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary. The fort is believed to be ancient, nearly 3000 years old, with ruins that include a temple dedicated to Lord Bhairavnath, caves, and water cisterns. Historically, it was built by the Rajas of Panhala and used by the Marathas before being captured by the British in 1818.
The temple on the fort is well-preserved, and the fort itself served as a strategic surveillance post. Today, Bhairavgad is a popular trekking destination known for its challenging terrain, thrilling rock patches, vertical walls, rock-cut steps, and panoramic views of the Sahyadri range and surrounding forts such as Harishchandragad and Naneghat.
The trek is adventurous and recommended for those with good stamina and proper gear, especially since certain parts are risky and not suitable during the monsoon. The fort exemplifies Maharashtra's rich historical and architectural legacy and offers a unique experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
