Bhareh Fort
Bhareh, Uttar Pradesh, India
Bhareh Fort is a historic fort located in Bhareh town, situated on the confluence of the Yamuna and Chambal rivers in Etawah district (administratively part of Auraiya district), Uttar Pradesh, India, at coordinates 26°30′N 79°14′50″E.
The fort belongs to the Sengar dynasty and is approximately 1,000 years old, and it holds significant historical importance as a stronghold of the 1857 Indian Rebellion (First War of Independence) against British rule. Raja Roop Singh (also spelled Rup Singh) of Bhareh courageously joined forces with Nana Saheb, Tatya Tope, and Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi in the 1857 rebellion, raising the trumpet of independence against the English army, and legends say that Rani Laxmibai herself stayed at this fort for a night during her journey.
The British attacked the very strong fort in September 1858 using 18-pounder French carronade cannons, sailing to Bhareh on merchant boats via the Yamuna River from Agra under Lieutenant Forbes, and finally captured it but found it abandoned as Raja Roop Singh was fighting guerrilla warfare in the surrounding forests for three years from 1857 to 1860.
