Bhatner Fort
Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, India
Bhatner Fort in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, is one of the oldest and most historically significant forts in India, built around 295 AD by King Bhupat of the Bhati dynasty as a secure fortress during turbulent times. The fort is constructed entirely of bricks and covers about 52 bighas in a parallelogram shape, with numerous bastions for defense.
It lies strategically on the banks of the River Ghaggar and has historically served as a stronghold against various invaders including Timur, who recognized it as one of the strongest forts in India. The fort commanded the Delhi-Multan trade route, making it a vital military and economic center.
Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of Rajput rulers, Mughals, and Bikaner State, with each leaving architectural and cultural marks. In 1805, it was renamed Hanumangarh after Raja Soorat Singh of Bikaner captured it on a Tuesday, considered auspicious to Lord Hanuman.
The fort's enduring presence and robust construction symbolize the martial legacy and historical importance of the region. Today, the fort stands as a testament to Rajasthan's ancient glory and a key attraction for history enthusiasts and tourists.
