Bhavangad Fort
Tighare, Maharashtra, India
Bhavangad Fort, located near Tighare village in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, was built by Maratha leader Chimaji Appa in 1737 during the campaign against Portuguese rule in the region.
The fort served as a strategic watchpoint along the Konkan coast to counter the Portuguese forces who controlled several forts in the area, including Vasai. Constructed using black basalt stone primarily without limestone mortar in parts, the fort lies on a small hill and originally involved the efforts of about 2,000 laborers.
Key surviving features of the fort include its crenellated bastions, the remnants of the outer walls, a west-facing entrance built in the Gomukhi style, and a square-shaped water tank carved from the rock that still holds water. The Bhavangadeshwar temple at the fort’s highest point is a notable religious site, while nearby caves and ruins hint at its historical use for storage and shelter during conflicts.
Today, the fort is mostly in ruins, overgrown with vegetation, but remains a popular trekking destination offering insights into the Maratha struggle against colonial powers and the natural beauty of the surrounding region.
