It dates back to between the 8th and 12th centuries and is believed to have been the capital of the Chutia Kingdom, ruled by the Sutiyas, a Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group.

The site covers a large fortified area with substantial brick and stone walls protected naturally by hills to the north. The ruins include a central complex with halls, gates, and fortified walls showcasing medieval architectural styles. Excavations have revealed numerous artifacts like pottery, terracotta figurines, plaques, and inscribed bricks.

The site is culturally significant and associated with the legendary King Bhishmaka, father of Rukmini, tying it to local legends and Hindu mythology.
