The fort occupies around four acres on a hill detached from Bhimashankar Hill, flanked by the Bhima River and its tributary. Its origins are not well documented, but it was likely built as a watchtower to protect trade routes linking Konkan and Pune regions.

The fort features two main caves, one containing a Shivling and serpent carvings, and the remains of ramparts, bastions, and water cisterns carved into rock, some of which still hold potable water. The fort's sacred aspects include a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and the presence of historical relics and carvings indicative of religious and cultural significance.
