Verified Birwadi Fort

Birwadi, Maharashtra, India

Birwadi Fort is a small hill fort located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra near the village of Birwadi, about 3 kilometers from Chanera village.

The fort sits approximately 1,200 feet above sea level and looks like a small hillock from a distance. Built around 1648 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj after capturing Kalyan, the fort was strategically used to keep watch over the Revdanda creek and monitor activities of the Siddis.

The fort is notable for its four corner bastions and well-preserved main gate. Along the path to the fort, there is a temple dedicated to Goddess Bhavani, featuring a spacious yard with some cannons and a six-foot statue of Shivaji Maharaj. Visitors can climb about 100 steps to reach the temple.

The fort has several rock-cut water tanks, including one known locally as ‘Ghodyache Taake.’ The terrain around the fort can be slippery during monsoons, so caution is advised while trekking. Exploring the small plateau of the fort takes around half an hour, and the location offers beautiful views of the lush valley and greenery that surrounds it.
