Boma National Park
Eastern South Sudan (Boma area, Jonglei State), South Sudan
Boma National Park in southeastern South Sudan, bordering Ethiopia in Jonglei State, is one of Africa’s largest protected areas, covering about 22,800 square kilometers of grasslands, woodlands, forests, and seasonal wetlands.
The park is famous for hosting the world’s second-largest annual animal migration, which includes nearly a million white-eared kob, tiang, Mongalla gazelles, and Bohor reedbuck moving between Boma and neighboring Bandingilo National Park.
Boma is home to elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, numerous antelope species, and over 400 species of birds, making it a haven for wildlife and birdwatching. While the park’s infrastructure and tourism services are currently minimal due to decades of conflict, recent management deals focus on conserving the park’s biodiversity and unlocking its eco-tourism potential, while supporting indigenous communities such as the Anuak, Murle, and Toposa.
The best time to visit is during the dry season from December to March, when wildlife viewing is at its peak and the climate is most favorable.
