Botanical Garden Città Studi
Milan, Italy, Italy
The Botanical Garden Città Studi, also known as Orto Botanico Città Studi (formerly Orto Botanico di Cascina Rosa), is a botanical garden maintained by the University of Milan, located at Via Camillo Golgi, 18 in the Città Studi district of Milan, Lombardy, Italy, spanning approximately 25,000 square meters (2.5 hectares or about 6.2 acres).
Created in 2001 (officially opened in 2002) on reclaimed land of the ancient Cascina Rosa farm following a resolution by the Municipality of Milan, the garden restored a long-degraded urban area to public use as an academic and research center, officially recognized as a museum collection (Raccolta Museale) by the Lombardy Region in 2004. The garden combines scientific research with conservation and enhancement of plant species, hosting numerous plant species both native and exotic, and is conceived both to support university research and teaching and to bring the general public closer to the knowledge of plant species.
The garden features three state-of-the-art greenhouses dedicated to research with automated climate-controlled departments designed for physical/biological containment and maintaining plant species in purity, under the directorship of Professor Marco Caccianiga.
