Verified British Komenda Fort

Komenda, Ghana, Ghana

British Komenda Fort, also known as Fort Komenda, was built by the British between 1695 and 1698 in the coastal town of Komenda, in present-day Ghana.

It was constructed around an earlier English trading post built in 1633 to strengthen British trade and military presence in the region, especially to rival the nearby Dutch Fort Vredenburgh. The rectangular stone fort had four bastions and guns positioned to protect the coastline and monitor shipping routes. The fort became a key part of European activities on the Gold Coast, involved in trade including the transatlantic slave trade.

The British abandoned it in the early 19th century after the abolition of the slave trade. Ownership shifted between the British and Dutch amidst local resistance and military conflicts, with the Dutch ultimately controlling the fort before ceding their possessions back to the British in 1872. Today, the ruins of Fort Komenda are preserved as part of Ghana’s historic sites and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving as a reminder of the complex colonial and trade history of the region .
