Fort Fredenzburg
Old Ningo, Ghana, Ghana
Fort Fredensborg, also known as Fort Fredenzburg, is a historic Danish colonial fort located in Old Ningo (also called Great Ningo or simply Ningo), a coastal village along the Gulf of Guinea in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, Ghana, where the Danish were the first European settlers establishing the fort in 1734 with construction beginning that year and completing in 1741.
The fort, which literally means "Borough of Freedom" in Danish, was built as part of the Danish Gold Coast trading posts and served as a fairly important slave trading station within Danish Guinea, functioning primarily to hold enslaved Africans before they were transported across the Atlantic in the transatlantic slave trade.
After the abolition of the slave trade in the early 19th century, the fort's importance rapidly declined and it fell into disrepair, with the military presence reduced to just one soldier stationed in 1835 whose only task was to maintain the Danish flag, and by 1850 the fort was already in ruins when it was handed over to the British on March 8, 1850 along with other Danish possessions and incorporated into the Gold Coast.
