Fort Dorothea
Akwidaa, Ghana
Fort Dorothea in Akwidaa, Ghana, was originally built as a small triangular lodge by the Brandenburgers in 1683 on a promontory at the end of a peninsula between the Suni River and the sea.
It was captured and temporarily controlled by the Dutch between 1687 and 1690, then returned to Brandenburg control in 1698 before several shifts in possession occurred until it was sold to the Dutch in 1718. The fort was enlarged by the Dutch and served as a significant trading post and military stronghold during the period of European colonization and the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Now preserved as a ruin, Fort Dorothea is part of Ghana’s rich colonial heritage and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The land around the ruins holds cultural significance for the local Akwidaa community, serving as a royal cemetery, and visitors are advised to seek permission before visiting. The fort offers visitors historical insights alongside beautiful views of the surrounding area.
