Fort Venon
Prampram, Ghana
Fort Vernon, located near Prampram in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, was built in 1742 by the Royal African Company as a small English trading fort primarily to support the transatlantic slave trade. Constructed from rough stones and inexpensive materials, the fort’s initial structure was destroyed by the Danes before 1783. It was rebuilt by the British in 1806 but deteriorated quickly, leading to its abandonment around 1816.
The fort was briefly reoccupied in 1831 but abandoned again in 1844, gradually falling into ruins. Fort Vernon serves as a significant historical symbol of European colonial and economic influence in West Africa and the history of the Atlantic slave trade. As part of the collection of Ghanaian forts and castles, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, highlighting its importance as a somber reminder of a dark chapter in history.
