Fort Batenstein
Butre, Ghana
Fort Batenstein is a historic fort and trading post built by the Dutch in 1656 near the town of Butre in Ghana. It was established primarily to prevent Swedish attempts to set up trading posts in the area and to secure Dutch control over the Gold Coast. The fort, whose name means "profit fort," was part of a network of European forts involved in trade, including the transatlantic slave trade.
A significant event in its history is the Treaty of Butre signed in 1656 between the Dutch and the local Ahanta people, establishing Dutch authority in the region. Though never a major trading center, the fort was strategically important and served as the base for Dutch military efforts during conflicts like the Dutch–Ahanta War in the 19th century.
After the Dutch ceded the Gold Coast to Britain in 1872, the local population protested the change in control. Today, Fort Batenstein remains a ruin but is preserved as a historical site offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and is part of Ghana's cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO.
