Burhanpur Fort, also known as Shahi Qila, is a historic Mughal-era fort located on the banks of the Tapti River in Madhya Pradesh.

Built originally by the Faruqi dynasty around the early 16th century, it was later extensively expanded and fortified under Mughal Emperor Akbar after his conquest in 1601. The fort is famous for its grand palatial buildings, ornate halls, and a rare garden on its terrace. Architecturally, it combines Persian, Mughal, and indigenous Indian styles with exquisite carvings, mosques, and courtyards all reflecting the grandeur of its time.

This fort is historically significant as it served as a royal residence and has links to the Taj Mahal’s origin, reputedly planned here after the death of Mumtaz Mahal. Nearby is the notable Asirgarh Fort, known for its formidable defenses and layered architectural influences spanning Hindu, Islamic, and British eras.
