Buria Fort

Buria Fort is a small historic fortress in the town of Buria in Yamunanagar district, Haryana, originally built in the 16th century by Mughal rulers and later captured in the 17th century by Sikh kings, especially the Sikh ruler Nanu Singh who established the princely state of Budiya (Buria) from it.

The fort stands on raised ground and has a square plan with four octagonal bastions at the corners, two gateways, thick walls made of lakhori (small) bricks, and architectural features inspired by Mughal and Rajput styles such as multifoil arches, overhangs, brackets and domical roofs.

Over time it became the headquarters of a Jat principality and, after British expansion, lost its political importance; today it is largely in ruins and used as private property, though its west gate and parts of the wall remain visible. Nearby, Buria is also known for the Rang Mahal, a three‑storied pleasure palace built by a chief courtier of Shah Jahan, and the village is said to be the birthplace of Birbal, the famous courtier of Akbar, adding to its Mughal and local historical significance.
