Verified Buxar Fort

Buxar, Bihar , India

Buxar Fort in Bihar, India, was built by King Rudra Deo in 1054 AD and is situated on an artificial mound on the banks of the River Ganga.

The fort has a rich history linked to ancient Indian epics as it is traditionally considered the site where Lord Rama defeated the demon Taraka and where the sage Vishvamitra had his ashram. It played a crucial role in the Battle of Buxar in 1764, a defining event that established British dominance over Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha.

Archaeological excavations in the 1920s revealed inscriptions dating back to the 3rd and 4th centuries, indicating the area's long-standing cultural significance. Though much of the fort lies in ruins with only the southern walls and bastions partially intact, it still draws interest due to its historical importance, nearby temples, and its proximity to the battlefield of the famous battle that shaped India's colonial history.

The fort also housed a mysterious subterranean passage known as Patalganga, and the site is surrounded by numerous local legends and ancient structures, embodying centuries of Indian heritage.
