The Cairo Citadel, also known as the Citadel of Saladin, is a monumental medieval fortress that overlooks Cairo from the Mokattam Hills.

Built in the 12th century by Saladin, it served as the seat of Egypt’s rulers and government for centuries. Within the citadel stands the magnificent Mosque of Muhammad Ali, often called the Alabaster Mosque because of its distinctive alabaster-covered walls. Built in the 19th century in an Ottoman style, the mosque is famous for its large central dome, soaring minarets, elegant interior, and panoramic views over Cairo, making the complex one of Egypt’s most iconic historical landmarks.
