Verified Calderstones Park

Liverpool , United Kingdom

Calderstones Park in Liverpool spans 126 acres and is renowned for its diverse attractions, including a botanical garden, playground, boating lake, and the historic Calderstones Mansion House, built in 1828 in Georgian style.

The park is named after the Calderstones, six Neolithic sandstone boulders that are rare surviving components of a passage grave dating back about 4,000 years; these stones were relocated to the estate by a former owner and now serve as a key historical feature. Another ancient highlight is the Allerton Oak, estimated to be over 1,000 years old, famous locally for its size and alleged historical connection to a medieval court.

Post-World War II improvements turned the park into Liverpool’s third botanic garden with glasshouses and themed outdoor plantings, including a Japanese garden and bog garden. Calderstones Park also hosts the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament and is popular year-round for its scenic beauty, recreational facilities, and rich history related to Liverpool’s cultural and natural heritage.

The Mansion House now serves as the headquarters of The Reader charity, which promotes literacy and literature through community engagement and reading initiatives.
