Capaccio
Italy, Italy
Capaccio Paestum (often just called Capaccio) is a town in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of southwestern Italy, named after the Latin Caput Aquae meaning “source of water”.
The historic hilltop village, sometimes called Capaccio Vecchia, sits about 400 meters above sea level between the mountains Soprano and Sottano, offering sweeping views over the plain of Paestum, the Gulf of Salerno, and even the island of Capri on clear days. Originally established to escape malaria and Saracen attacks on the coastal plains, the town was destroyed in the Middle Ages by Frederick II and later rebuilt under the Kingdom of Naples.
Today, Capaccio serves as the administrative center for the area commonly known as Capaccio-Paestum, which includes the world-famous ancient Greek city of Paestum just below, renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved Magna Graecia temples dedicated to Poseidon. The town features charming narrow streets, historic landmarks like the Augustinian-era Church of St. Peter the Apostle, the Baron’s Arch built to commemorate Joachim Murat’s visit, and public gardens that serve as a pleasant starting point for walking tours.
With around 20,000 residents and a rich blend of medieval architecture, agricultural traditions, and proximity to major archaeological sites, Capaccio is a picturesque destination that combines history, culture, and stunning natural scenery in Italy’s Cilento National Park area.
