Carclew House
UK, United Kingdom
Carclew House, a grand Palladian mansion near Mylor in Cornwall, UK, was originally developed in the early 1700s by Samuel Kempe and transformed around 1749 by wealthy mining merchant William Lemon with architect Thomas Edwards, who added elegant colonnades, pavilions, and a south portico.
Under the Lemon family, especially horticulturist Sir Charles Lemon in the 19th century, its gardens became renowned for exotic rhododendrons, camellias, and plants from Himalayan expeditions, making it a key Victorian horticultural site overlooking Restronguet Creek.
Destroyed by a devastating fire in 1934, the house was never rebuilt, leaving picturesque ruins amid surviving historic gardens now on heritage at-risk lists, with a modern house later built nearby.
