Castello Medioevale di Roccascalegna
Roccascalegna, Italy
Castello Medioevale di Roccascalegna is a medieval fortress perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop above the village of Roccascalegna in the Abruzzo region of southern Italy.
Originally built in the 11th and 12th centuries by the Lombards, the castle was expanded and fortified in the 15th and 16th centuries during times of military rivalry. It was designed to guard the Secco Valley below and served as a strategic defensive stronghold. The castle has several notable architectural features, such as a steep flight of steps leading to the entrance, remnants of a drawbridge, a sentinel tower, a prison tower, an Angevin tower, a chapel with a rainwater collection system, and a watchtower built of stone and brick with openings on all sides.
Over the centuries, the castle fell into disrepair and was abandoned for about three centuries, suffering damage from weather and local looting. Restoration efforts in the late 20th century revived the structure, preserving its original medieval character.
The castle is well known for its legends, including the story of the Crow Baron who supposedly enforced the medieval "right of the first night" and whose bloody handprint is said to still appear on the castle walls. Today, the castle is open to visitors who can explore its courtyards, towers, chapel, and prison, while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding valley and Majella National Park. It also serves as a venue for cultural events and medieval reenactments, blending rich historic heritage with the natural beauty of its location.
