Cetin Castle
Croatia, Croatia
Cetin Castle is a medieval fortress located 5 km south of Cetingrad above the village of Podcetin in central Croatia's Karlovac County.
Its origins are unclear but possibly date to Roman times, with the first documented mention in 1334 and ownership granted to the Frankopan family in 1387, featuring thick stone walls, towers, and strategic hilltop positioning for defense.
The site gained pivotal historical importance in 1527 when Croatian nobles gathered at the Cetin Parliament to elect Ferdinand I of Habsburg as king after the Battle of Mohács, linking Croatia to the Habsburg monarchy until 1918, though it later fell to Ottoman forces and was abandoned by the 19th century.
