Verified Chanda Fort

Chandrapur, Maharashtra, India

Chanda Fort, also known as Chandrapur Fort, is an ancient fort located in Chandrapur city, Maharashtra, at the confluence of the Erai and Zarpat rivers.

Built in the 13th century by Gond king Khandkya Ballal Sah, the fort is notable for its strong stone walls about 15 to 20 feet high and several gates including four main gates—Jatpura, Anchaleshwar, Pathanpura, and Binba—along with five smaller gates called "khidkis." The fort served both defensive and administrative purposes and was a symbol of Gond power that lasted for nearly 800 years.

It houses ancient temples like the Mahakali Mandir built in the 16th century and other structures reflecting the region’s rich cultural heritage. Chandrapur Fort stands as one of the oldest architectural landmarks in the area and offers insight into the history of the Gond dynasty and the broader region of eastern Maharashtra.

The fort is accessible from Chandrapur city, which is well connected by road, rail, and air, serving as a significant historical site and tourist attraction near the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve.
