Chanderi Fort, also known as Kirti Durg, is a historic fortress located on the highest point of Chandragiri Hill in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh.
It was originally built in the 11th century by the Pratihara king Kirti Pal and has been rebuilt and modified multiple times by subsequent rulers such as Alauddin Khilji, Babur, and the Bundela chiefs. The fort spans a five-kilometer perimeter, enclosing several heritage structures including the intricately carved Khilji mosque, the Hawa Paur (Gate of Winds), Naukhanda Palace, and the tomb of Hazrat Abdul Rahman Narnuli.
The main entrance, known as the Khooni Darwaza, has a grim history related to battles and bloodshed. The fort exhibits an eclectic mix of Rajput, Malwa, and Mughal architectural styles, with massive stone walls, ornate gateways, palaces, halls, and temples including notable Jain temples featuring exquisite carvings.
The fort occupies a strategic location giving panoramic views of the surrounding town and landscape, making it a significant symbol of Chanderi’s diverse cultural heritage and historic importance.
