Chandragad/Dhavalgad
Raigad, Maharashtra, India
Chandragad Fort, also known as Dhavalgad Fort, is located in Raigad district, Maharashtra, about 182 km from Mumbai.
This fort was strategically important for overseeing the Varandha Ghat trade routes connecting Bhor to the Konkan region. Originally controlled by Chandrarao More, the fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in January 1656 during his campaigns to consolidate the Maratha Empire.
The fort is situated near the Krishna River valley, surrounded by forest and hills, and features about 14 rock-cut water tanks along with a few ruins of old structures. After the death of Shivaji's son Sambhaji Maharaj, the fort was briefly seized by Itkadar Khan, a commander under Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Today, Chandragad remains a popular trekking destination, known for its historical significance and natural surroundings within Raigad.
