Chandragiri Fort
Reddivaripalle, Andhra Pradesh, India
Chandragiri Fort in Reddivaripalle, Andhra Pradesh, is a historic fortress built in the 11th century by the Yadava Naidu rulers and later became the fourth capital of the Vijayanagara Empire during the 14th and 16th centuries.
The fort is renowned for its impressive Indo-Saracenic architecture reflected in its two main palaces, Raja Mahal and Rani Mahal, which are constructed mainly from stone, brick, and lime mortar without timber. The Raja Mahal, now an archaeological museum, features intricate stucco work and pyramidal towers resembling Hindu temple shikharas, while the Rani Mahal served as the queen’s residence.
Within the fort are also eight ruined temples dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu, exemplifying Vijayanagara architectural style. Strategically situated atop a hill about 600 feet high, the fort offers commanding views and defensive advantages. Historically, Chandragiri Fort was prominent during the reign of Vijayanagara rulers, including Krishnadevaraya, and is the site where the land grant for Fort St. George was signed, marking an important connection to British colonial history.
It has since become an important archaeological and tourist site preserving South India's medieval culture and architecture.
