Chandwad Fort
Nashik District, Maharashtra, India
Chandwad Fort, also known as Chandor Fort, is located about 3 kilometers from the town of Chandwad in Nashik district, Maharashtra.
It was built around 801 AD by Dridhaprahara, founder of the Seuna (Yadava) dynasty, to guard the trade route from Khandesh to Nashik and oversee the nearby Chandor pass. The fort and surrounding area hold cultural significance with King Bhoj establishing 52 temples nearby and his daughter Chandrakala married at the fort.
Over the centuries, the fort was controlled by the Bahmani Sultanate, the Mughal army, the Maratha Empire, and finally the British in 1818. Chandwad became known for its brass craftsmanship during the 18th century under the Holkar rulers. The fort features ruins of old fortifications and is historically important as a strategic trade post and cultural hub in the region.
