Chelsea Physic Garden
London, England, United Kingdom
The Chelsea Physic Garden in London, founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, is one of Europe's oldest botanic gardens and was originally created as an outdoor classroom to train apothecary apprentices in identifying and using medicinal plants.
Located on a four-acre site by the River Thames in Chelsea, the garden features a unique collection focused entirely on medicinal, herbal, and useful plants. Over the centuries, it became an important center for botanical research and plant exchange, with famous botanists like Philip Miller contributing to its legacy. The garden was enclosed with walls early on to create a favorable microclimate and featured one of the first heated glasshouses.
It remained primarily a research and teaching garden until the 1980s when it became an independent charity and opened to the public, now welcoming over 80,000 visitors annually. Today, Chelsea Physic Garden continues to be a sanctuary of plant science and education in the heart of London, playing a key role in biodiversity conservation and public engagement with nature.
