Chiktan is a historic village in the Kargil district of Ladakh, India, known for the ruins of Chiktan Fort, also called Chiktan Khar, which was a royal residence and political center for several centuries.

The fort was first initiated in the 8th century by Prince Tahtah Khan from Baltistan, who was captivated by the area's beauty and started construction, with significant development of the castle by Balti craftsmen in the 16th century. The fortress rose as a symbol of unity, strength, and community, featuring distinctive architecture with timber-supported ceilings and intricate wood carving, making it renowned across Ladakh and Tibet.

The fort witnessed many attacks and political conflicts, especially during the Dogra annexation, after which neglect and local reuse of materials led to its deterioration. Today, although in ruins, the site remains an important cultural and historical symbol for the region, offering spectacular views of the Indus River and surrounding mountains and reminding of its bygone glory as a strategic fortress and royal home.​
