Church Ope Cove
Dorset, United Kingdom
Church Ope Cove is a small, secluded beach on the eastern side of the Isle of Portland in Dorset, United Kingdom, forming part of the Jurassic Coast.
Its sandy beach has largely been replaced by rounded pebbles due to quarry debris, and it features a small stream flowing to the sea, one of the few remaining active streams on the island. Historically significant, Church Ope Cove is believed to be the site of the first recorded Viking attack in Britain around 789 AD.
Overlooking the cove is Rufus Castle, a Norman fortress built in the 12th century for defense, alongside the ruins of St Andrew’s Church, the island's first parish church possibly established in Saxon times. In the late 18th century, the Gothic revival Pennsylvania Castle was built above the cove, and nearby is John Penn’s abandoned bath, an 1800s seaside bathing facility.
The cove also has a history of smuggling, fishing, and was part of World War II defensive measures including pillboxes and a minefield. Today, it is accessed by paths through historic sites, maintaining a mix of natural beauty and rich heritage.
