Citadel of Arwad
Syria, Syria
The Citadel of Arwad is a historic fortress in the middle of Arwad Island off Syria’s coast near Tartus.
It was built on older ancient remains and later rebuilt and reused by different powers, including the Crusaders and the Mamluks, so it reflects many layers of the island’s history. Today it is one of the island’s best-known landmarks and a reminder of Arwad’s long role as a small but important maritime stronghold.
