Marqueh is a location near Tartus, a major port city on the Mediterranean coast of Syria, known as the second largest port city in the country.

Tartus has historically been an important trade and military site, featuring a Crusader-era fortress and a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. The area around Tartus, including its smaller towns like Marqueh, is rich in history and archeological sites. Tartus has been relatively calm compared to other parts of Syria during the civil conflict, serving as a crucial hub with its seaport that also hosts Russia's only overseas naval base. The region has maintained a quieter, more stable atmosphere and partly functions as a resort town due to its coastal location.
