Marqab Castle
Baniyas, Syria
Marqab Castle, also known as Qal'at al-Marqab or Margat, is a historic Crusader fortress located on a hilltop near Baniyas on the Syrian coast. Originally built in the 11th century and fortified by the Knights Hospitaller in the 12th century, the castle features robust stone walls, imposing towers, a chapel, large halls, and a donjon within a triangular walled enclosure.
It served as a major stronghold for the Hospitallers and was strategically important for controlling the coastal region and nearby inland areas. The castle also functioned as a state prison during the Mamluk period after its capture in 1285. Over centuries, it witnessed numerous battles, changes in control, and architectural expansions, reflecting the complex military and political history of the Crusader and Muslim eras in the Mediterranean.
Today, it stands as a prominent monument showcasing medieval military architecture and the legacy of the Crusaders in Syria.
