Clacton-on-Sea is a seaside town in Essex, United Kingdom, originally part of the parish of Great Clacton.

Its development as a resort began in the 1870s, initiated by civil engineer and developer Peter Bruff, who envisioned a genteel seaside destination. The first major building was the pier, opened in 1871, which allowed ships to bring visitors before the railway arrived in 1882, connecting Clacton to London and other areas.

The town grew rapidly with shops, hotels like the Royal Hotel, and residential villas by the 1880s, becoming popular for its sandy beaches and health benefits of sea air and bathing. Throughout the 20th century, Clacton expanded as a working-class holiday destination, with additional holiday camps and caravan sites, while continuing to evolve with residential growth and local amenities.

Despite challenges like a significant tornado in 1981, the town remains a vibrant coastal community blending historical charm with modern leisure and housing developments.
