Claremont House

Claremont House is an 18th‑century Palladian mansion less than a mile south of Esher in Surrey, England, set within a historic estate that once served as a royal country residence.

The current mansion was built between about 1771 and 1779 for Lord Clive of India to the designs of Capability Brown, with help from his architect partner Sir Henry Holland and the young John Soane, replacing an earlier house by Sir John Vanbrugh.

The estate later became a royal home for Princess Charlotte of Wales and Prince Leopold, and was much admired by Queen Victoria; after the school era began, the main house and its surrounding parkland were taken over by Claremont Fan Court School, while the landscaped grounds became a National Trust landscape garden.

Today the house itself is a Grade I listed building used as part of the school, and the wider Claremont landscape garden is open to the public as one of the most important surviving 18th‑century English landscape gardens, with a lake, a turfed amphitheatre, and picturesque walking routes.
