Colvale Fort
Goa, India
Colvale Fort, also known as Fortaleza de São Sebastião de Colvale, was built in 1635 by the Portuguese Viceroy D. Miguel de Noronha to protect the northern borders of Bardez in Goa. It features a mix of Portuguese and Hindu architectural styles, reflecting the influence of both rulers over time, including modifications by the Marathas when they occupied the fort in the 18th century.
The fort served as a strategic defense point during conflicts between the Portuguese and Marathas, witnessing battles and changes in control before being abandoned in the mid-19th century. Built of brick, stone, and mud, the fort originally had bastions and cannons, though now only ruins remain surrounded by trees, giving it a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. It is one of Goa’s oldest forts and attracts visitors interested in history and ancient architecture.
