Corjuem Fort
Corjuem, Goa, India
Corjuem Fort in Goa, built by the Portuguese in 1705 on the island of Corjuem, was constructed as a defense against Maratha invasions and to protect the region near Panaji.
It is a small, square-shaped fort built from laterite stone, featuring thick walls with gun ports and murder holes at each corner with ramp-like stairs leading to the ramparts. The fort housed a small battalion and four cannons for defense, along with a chapel dedicated to St. Anthony and living quarters for soldiers. Corjuem Fort successfully defended against attacks by the Marathas, Bhonsles, and Rane Rajputs in the 18th and 19th centuries.
It also served as a military school in the early 1800s. A notable story from the fort's history involves Ursula e Lancastre, a courageous Portuguese woman who disguised herself as a man to join the army and defend the fort. Today, the fort is surrounded by lush greenery and offers panoramic views of the surrounding villages and islands.
Though partially in ruins, it remains a historical monument reflecting Portuguese military architecture, colonial history, and local legends, and it is under restoration to preserve its heritage.
