Verified Danish Fort

Tharangambadi, Tamil Nadu, India

The Danish Fort in Tharangambadi, also known as Fort Dansborg, was built in 1620 by the Danish East India Company after an agreement with the Thanjavur king.

It served as the base for Danish settlement and trade on the Coromandel Coast and is the second largest Danish fort after Kronborg in Denmark. The fort is trapezoidal, built in Danish architectural style, featuring large halls, high ceilings, columned verandahs, and four distinctive camel-hump shaped domes supported by a central pillar.

Within the fort are rooms that served various purposes including the governor's residence, a kitchen, a church now converted into a museum, and storerooms. Tharangambadi was an important trading post for cotton textiles and other goods under Danish control until the fort and town were sold to the British in 1845. The fort complex also includes older structures such as the 13th-century Masilamaninathar Temple and showcases a blend of European and local architectural elements.

Though no longer strategically significant after British acquisition, the fort remains a significant historical and cultural landmark, preserved for its colonial heritage and is a popular tourist attraction today.
