Deeg Palace
Rajasthan, India
Deeg Palace in Rajasthan is an 18th-century royal complex built by Maharaja Badan Singh and later expanded by his son Maharaja Suraj Mal, rulers of the Jat kingdom of Bharatpur.
It was designed as a luxurious summer retreat and fortress, blending Mughal and Rajput architectural styles with a strong emphasis on comfort and water features. The palace complex is set between two large reservoirs, Rup Sagar and Gopal Sagar, with beautiful charbagh-style gardens featuring over 500 fountains fed by an ingenious hydraulic system.
Key structures include the marble Suraj Bhawan, believed to have been partly rebuilt using marble from Delhi’s Red Fort after Suraj Mal’s military victories, and Gopal Bhawan, the main royal residence.
The palace is fortified with high walls, bastions, and a moat, highlighting its dual role as a fortress and leisure estate. Known for its elaborate waterworks that cool the buildings during summer and spectacular rainbow-colored fountains during festivals like Holi, Deeg Palace is an architectural marvel and a testament to Jat power and aesthetic sensibility. It remains a preserved monument reflecting the rich heritage of Rajasthan’s royal past.
